Many good words have been written on the exceptionalism of New Orleans by authors who have far more education and eloquence on the subject than myself. With that said, there are moments in this city when I am distinctly reminded of who far removed we are from the rest of the country. Moments like the above: a dapper young man, seated on a horse, watching a group of African Americans (who appropriate elements of Native American culture as a means of tribute and gratitude) tapping into a cultural heritage that draws a distinct line across the entirety of the Black Diaspora.
