Pop Culinary Art

The New Orleans pop up dining scene continues to evolve and grow on a daily basis. Here’s five current favorites. The above main image, courtesy of Facebook, depicts a dinner at The PDR Nola.

Nola Foodsmiths

Comfort food with a twist. Leave your diet at home and come hungry and grab a drink from the bar. This is a late-night spot with all the goodies to make your dreams come true. Especially if you’ve been out drinking and having a good time.

An a la carte menu features dishes like Stuffed Shrimp: Louisiana shrimp stuffed with smoked jalepeno cream cheese wrapped in bacon and fried with a bourbon BBQ sauce and Crawfish Beignets with pepper jelly. Grab your friends, even if it’s like herding cats, to join the Nola Foodsmiths Thu., Fri. and Sat. nights 11pm-2am at Evangeline II. Menu Changes weekly, and is regularly updated on Facebook and Instagram (@nolafoodsmiths).

Karibu Kitchen

The patio at Handsome Willy’s comes alive from 4pm-10pm on Tuesday evenings with the succulent rotisserie meats of Karibu Kitchen. In addition to the weekly selection of meat, each menu features unique theme guiding the selection of the various sides and entrees. Fresh picked vegetables find their way from the farm to your mouth and all meat is fair game. No reservations necessary. Follow them on Facebook to see what’s cooking each week and to see where else to find them around town.

The PDR Nola

If you see the red lantern burning out front (above) of Chef Rita Bernhardt and William Barial’s home in the historic Treme near Armstrong Park, you know something is cooking and it is sure to be delicious. This is a sit down dinner affair (our main image depicts a PDR dinner), with course progression beginning with a charcuterie spread accompanied by house made mustard, pickles and jam and culminating with a dessert that you will find room for somewhere. Local ingredients come alive in the experienced hands of Chef Rita and with Barial as your host, fun will be had at this food speakeasy. Monthly menu available online at The PDR Nola. It’s BYOB so pick up your favorite bottle of wine on the way. Reservations required, $65 per person.

Sugarman’s 1000 Bagel Brunch (Through June 14th)

Sunday bagels, New York-style. Join Laura Sugerman for an a la carte menu of freshly baked bagels in the gorgeous Bayou St. John. This brunch pop-up at 1000 Figs is BYO, with fresh squeezed orange juice and hot brewed coffee available for purchase on-site. The bagel offerings include house cured salmon with herbed cream cheese, red onion, capers and heirloom tomato or a breakfast sandwich with yard egg, aged cheddar and house smoked bacon.

Not feeling a bagel? Yeasted waffles are also on the menu with hibiscus infused mascarpone and fresh local berries. Menu subject to change, follow Sugarman’s Bagels on Facebook for upcoming events. Brunch set to resume in August after a short summer vacationl check their Facebook page for more information.

Mosquito Supper Club

At Mosquito Supper Club, the ladies put their Southern Louisiana roots to work, making guests feel like they are eating Sunday dinner like Grandma made it. This pop up experience is a celebration of the bounty of seafood produced locally along the Gulf coast.

The original Supper Club is 5- course seated meal served family style. Expect to come in, sit down, and pass around pot after pot of delicious home-style cooking. Keep your plate, enjoy the company, and soak in the tastes and aromas of food cooked from the heart. Reservations required, 24-30 people max. at Cajun Records above Mr. Gregory’s Deli, 806 Rampart Street.

Join Effie and Melissa for a Cajun Brunch every third Saturday of the month at Zeitgeist Theater and Church Alley Coffee. From 10am–3pm guests can dine and dance live Cajun music (see above). Brunch dishes feature local seasonal ingredients, pay at the door. Follow them on Instagram and Twitter, @mosquitosupperclub. Prices vary. Book reservations and check their calendar on their website for other fun events like monthly Zydeco dancing shrimp boils.

Black Swan Food Experience

The Black Swan Food experience is a street food style union of Creole, Thai, and Caribbean flavors with Chef Nikki Wright serving soulful dishes such as avocado fries and crawfish fritters. You can find them weekly at Handsome Willy’s on Friday nights from 10pm until close.

Featuring a huge outside patio and jams by DJ RQAways, The Black Swan Food Experience propels customers into the weekend. No cover for tunes and delicious eats are a la carte.     The Arts Council of New Orleans

    The Arts Council of New Orleans is a private, non-profit organization designated as the City’s official arts agency.     WWNO

We broadcast on 89.9 FM, and KTLN 90.5 FM in the Houma-Thibodaux area as a public service of the University of New Orleans.     WWOZ

    WWOZ 90.7 FM is the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Station offering listener-supported, volunteer-programmed community radio. WWOZ covers many events live in and around the city and across the United States, and broadcasts live from the famed New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival annually. WWOZ’s mission is to be the worldwide voice, archive, and flag-bearer of New Orleans culture and musical heritage.

    PRC

    Preservation Resource Center (PRC) has been preserving, restoring, and revitalizing New Orleans’ historic architecture and neighborhoods since 1974. Throughout its history, PRC has acted as an advocacy agent on a local, regional, and national scale, spreading the word about the city’s rich architectural heritage and the economic importance of preserving this heritage. PRC also takes a hands-on approach to preservation, with a history of successfully restoring over 1,400 properties. The center strengthens and revitalizes New Orleans in a way that is forward-looking and sustainable, yet sensitive to the city’s past and its heritage.

    NOMA

    As a nexus for the arts in New Orleans, NOMA is committed to preserving, interpreting, and enriching its collections and renowned sculpture garden; offering innovative experiences for learning and interpretation; and uniting, inspiring, and engaging diverse communities and cultures.

    The Historic New Orleans Collection

    The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) is a museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to preserving the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South. Its holdings comprise more than one million items from more than three centuries, documenting moments both major and minor. Its four exhibition spaces–the Williams Gallery, the Louisiana History Galleries, the Boyd Cruise Gallery, and the Laura Simon Nelson Galleries for Louisiana Art–faithfully depict the multicultural stories of the region, from permanent displays exploring the evolution of Louisiana to rotating exhibitions showcasing history and fine art.

    Southern Food

    The Southern Food and Beverage Museum is a nonprofit living history organization dedicated to the discovery, understanding and celebration of the food, drink and the related culture of the South. While based in New Orleans, the Museum examines and celebrates all the cultures that have come together through the centuries to create the South’s unique culinary heritage. The Museum is also home to the collections of the Museum of the American Cocktail, the Galerie d’Absinthe, and a demonstration kitchen.

    Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities

    The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to all Louisianans.

    The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities’ mission is to provide all Louisianans with access to and an appreciation of their own rich, shared and diverse historical, literary and cultural heritage through grant-supported outreach programs, family literacy and adult reading initiatives, teacher professional development institutes, publications, film and radio documentaries, museum exhibitions, cultural tourism, public lectures, library projects, and other public humanities programming.
